About BALKAPALOOZA!

This one-week intensive Eastern European music and culture summer workshop was developed for motivated young musicians ages 12-22. Focusing on honing musical skills and broadening cultural understanding, BALKAPALOOZA! offers a combination of student ensembles, hands-on learning, European folk singing, cultural studies, and intensives with guest area specialists. Registered students receive a study packet in advance of the workshop.

BALKAPALOOZA! is taking 2008 off for staff travel-study that will enhance future programming. Please keep in touch, and check back with us for summer 2009.

BALKAPALOOZA! is ideal for motivated young musicians who:

• are current students of Eastern European folk music who seek a deeper knowledge of these art forms and would like the opportunity to work with guest area specialists to sharpen already strong ensemble skills.
  (intermediate/advanced level participation recommended)
• are new to Eastern European folk music and would like to gain understanding of the various cultures and basic music techniques.
  (introduction/exploratory level participation recommended)
• would like to gain more experience in Eastern European-specific ensemble playing.
  (introduction/exploratory level participation recommended)

Intermediate/advanced level students are invited after a formal assessment by a BALKAPALOOZA! faculty mentor.

Introduction/exploratory level students must already have had previous study of a specific instrument. Ability to read music is helpful, but not mandatory (aural learners will have additional preparatory work).
